How One Small Nudge Taught Me to Trust Myself Again
What Happened When I Followed a Nudge I Didn’t Understand
I trusted myself this yesterday afternoon to do something I don’t ordinarily do.
I felt an urge — a nudge — to get up from my easel and walk a few blocks to this little bodega I hadn’t been in for months. I used to stop in there all the time, back when I was walking a neighbor’s dog for pocket money — two, three, sometimes five times a week. But lately, I’ve lost the rhythm.
Today, I just felt pulled.
Cookies, I told myself. I wanted cookies.
But now I know why I really went.
It wasn’t for cookies. It was because my inner being - my soul - wanted to line me up with a conversation that mattered.
The woman behind the counter is maybe mid-thirties — sweet, soft-spoken, the kind of woman who still glows when she talks about church. Her entire life and that of her family are centered around their church.
We were chatting about the store- how to drum up business - when she looked at me in this way that said, you’ll get it. And she said quietly,
“I really don’t want to be working in this store.”
I said, “Whoa. Hold up. We’re going to talk about that.”
Because if there’s one thing I believe with every cell in my body, it’s that no one should spend their life doing something they don’t want to do unless it’s absolutely necessary for survival. And in her case, it’s not necessary. Not at all.
And that’s when she said the thing that stopped me:
“The problem is, I don’t really trust myself to know what I want to do.”
And there it was — the heartbeat under everything I’ve been writing and thinking about lately.
Yes, my primary focus is to inspire and motivate women over 60, but today I learned this lack of self trust doesn’t know age limits.
We’re taught to trust authority. Trust the rules. Trust the church. Trust the man. Trust the expert.
But we were never taught to trust ourselves.
That’s how we lose our compass, that’s why so many feel as though they live inside an invisible fog.
The good news is you do have the choice to learn to develop trust with yourself, for yourself.
Trust doesn’t arrive wrapped in a bow one morning. It’s not something we “get.”
It’s something we build. And the first brick in the foundation of self trust is curiosity.
Curiosity says,
“What if I’m not as broken as I’ve been told?”
“What if I already know what I need?”
“What if the next right step is smaller — and kinder — than I thought?”
You don’t have to have faith yet.
You don’t have to be fearless.
You just have to be willing to wonder. And say these words outloud:
I simply decided to be curious about my own life.
Now as you practice curiosity, your nervous system needs to feel safe enough to join you.
Because if your body still thinks you’re in danger, ( for your nervous system that literally is anything new) it will fight your soul’s progress every step of the way.
That’s where the breathing comes in.
Breathing is the bridge between your mind and your body, between your fear and your trust.
It’s the quiet conversation that tells your system, we’re okay now.
The method I use — the one that changed everything for me — is simple but powerful:
Breathe in for four counts. Hold for four to six. Exhale for six.
Do that three times, right now.
Feel what happens.
Your shoulders drop. Your thoughts slow. Your body receives.
This breathing pattern is the secret to my success. It’s the cornerstone of everything I do. Because once your nervous system learns to feel safe, your soul finally has permission to lead.
That’s how trust begins.
That’s how it grows.
So today, because I want you to experience it too, I’m giving away both my “Build Trust With Yourself” and “Breathing for Trust” PDFs — free for the next 24 hours.
No strings, no sales pitch — just tools for your own becoming. Although I do want to hear from you. After you try them for one day. Leave a comment here and tell me what shifted. I actually want to hear.
Every time you follow a small curiosity — a walk to buy cookies, a book that calls your name, a little nudge that says “call her” or “take the long way home” — you’re whispering to your own soul, I trust you.
And that’s how it starts.
Not with certainty.
Not with confidence.
With curiosity — and breath.
The smallest “what if” can become the bridge back to yourself.
If this spoke to you, hit reply and tell me what you’re curious about lately — or click here to grab your two free PDFs.
