That can of varnish was in my home also. Your essay hit so close, I recognize and see my liberal use of my personalized varnish can for many years. I retired it recently and occasionally it wants to come back and give me a hand. It is in awareness that I actually have a can of varnish I can now take the lid off and use it, keep it for a rainy day, put it in a closet or maybe the landfill... when I am really ready to toss it. You hit the nail right on the head! On people, varnish makes everything LOOK shiny and bright, but it never loses its stink. Sometimes, others can see right through it and it smells like…. My varnish is thick and bumpy in spots where I’ve tried to revarnish. In other places, it’s getting old and peeling. What’s underneath looks worth restoration. It’s an authentic me. I gotta keep working at it. Thanks for the encouragement!
