The Golden Girls hit TV in 1985 — four women, all over 50, living together, laughing loud, and breaking every damn “rule” about what older women were supposed to be.
Back then, most of us were in our 20s or 30s, watching Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, and Sophia like they were living on another planet. Bold. Funny. Unapologetic. And now here we are, in our 60s and 70s, still wrestling with invisibility, permission, and the question: when do I get to claim my own damn life?
Here’s the kicker: that show cracked the door, but the culture was still drilling into us: be small, be nice, don’t want too much. We didn’t walk through the door then.
But now? Honey, we ARE the Golden Girls. And this time, the script is ours.
🌟 Dorothy — razor-sharp, sarcastic, unafraid to call bullshit. Lesson?
Your voice matters. Stop dumbing yourself down to keep the peace.
🌟 Blanche — bold, sensual, dripping with desire. Lesson?
Desire doesn’t come with an expiration date. Own it as long as you damn well please.
🌟 Rose — sweet, curious, unafraid to look silly. Lesson?
Stay curious. Don’t let cynicism choke out your joy. Wonder is a lifeline.
🌟 Sophia — fierce, wise, and funny as hell. Lesson?
Your years are your crown. That wisdom? It’s your superpower.
No wonder the show still hums in our bones. They were modeling what we didn’t know how to live yet: freedom, fun, friendship, and the audacity to keep sparkling long past 50.
So maybe the question isn’t why didn’t we absorb it then? The real question is: are we finally ready to let it change us now?
Inside my Substack circle, that’s exactly what we practice: reclaiming our voices, desires, and wisdom. Daily emails. Voxer pep talks. Sunday Zoom circles. The reminder you’re not invisible — you’re discovering and becoming- and that is exciting!
YOUR golden age starts the minute you say it does.
P.S. The Golden Girls are streaming on Hulu, Amazon Prime, Apple+, and YouTube. I feel a binge weekend coming. And this time, I’ll be watching with fresh eyes. You?
P.P.S. This week, I’m gifting How To Build Trust With Yourself to anyone who asks. Just click below — I’ll send it right to you.
Funny… I didn’t think it was interesting so I never watched but I will this weekend.
