The Freedom No One Can Take From You
Even on days when the headlines feel hopeless
Today is Independence Day in the United States of America.
And yes, there’s plenty to be angry about. Plenty to grieve. Plenty of new laws that feel more like shackles than structure. I won’t pretend otherwise. I won’t gloss over the ache so many of us feel watching the safety nets shrink while the systems grow more brittle by the day.
But this morning—quiet and early, with no plans to post, no plans to produce—I felt something rise in me.
A reminder:
No law has the power to override your inner freedom.
No court ruling can sever your connection to your soul.
No bill—no matter how cruel—can dismantle your capacity to dream.
And that matters. Especially now.
I may not be able to change legislation today.
But I can choose to keep creating.
I can choose to reclaim the dreams I buried beneath duty, fear, or fatigue.
And I can choose to give birth to new ones—dreams I never even imagined in my youth.
That is freedom.
And it’s still mine.
It’s still yours, too.
So if you’re feeling powerless today, you’re not alone. I feel it too. But I also know this truth in my bones:
Your power is not in what they allow.
Your power is in what you remember to claim.
Your mind, your heart, your soul—these are sovereign territory.
You can nurture your inner world.
You can build a new life at any age.
You can say yes to beauty, peace, healing, creation—even in the face of political cruelty.
So today, while the fireworks go off and the noise swirls around us, I’m taking an independent day for myself. No posts, no performing. Maybe I’ll paint, maybe I won’t. But I will sit with my soul. I will remember what’s mine. I will protect the fire that no law can extinguish.
And I hope you’ll do the same.
