You know....I could cry right now...because I Am That Woman you are talking about. I'm 57 but has lived by the same " rules" it has taken a Cancer diagnosis and now another setback of chronic pain flair up to make me stop the need to stay " on the same path" now I buy things that I enjoy and love, like books....I still think twice I still have the voice of " reason" but I know in my heart that my husband spends so much on his
" hobbies " and I say or think nothing of it. So so much here is so important to me. I'm so thankful to read this and I will most certainly save it to read again.
Very good article. Yes, most of my life was going along with what was normal and doing what was expected. I’ve suffered chronic pain for over 12 years now and this past year I’ve broken the mold. I told my husband there was something I wanted to do — take a trip to Santa Fe and go to a writing seminar there. (We are in our 80’s and have an RV.) So he said, let’s do it! While there I bought a cashmere shawl just because I wanted it. I bought a copper bracelet just because I wanted it. I set aside the idea that I needed to buy gifts for everyone in the family; they all have so much stuff I don’t know how they have room for it. And I told my husband I wanted a tattoo to cover a scar on my forearm and he said, let’s look for a nice place to do it. I did it!! My kids are shocked. I don’t care!! I feel like the me that’s always been somewhere inside of me. I started my own SubStack and I write whatever comes to the surface. I’m pleased when others enjoy it, but mostly I’m pleased that I have the courage and confidence to just write, and to notice things to write about. I’m continuing to take zoom classes and we’re going to Santa Fe again in the spring. I have so much to look forward to, in spite of the chronic pain. Life has become very rewarding in so many ways! 🫶🏻💙
Angelika I would so love to meet you for coffee/tea/lunch/dessert etc.
I’ve enjoyed your SubStack posts as well; they are moving and thoughtful. There are so many beautiful people here, it’s like finding a tribe of like-minded individuals to hang out with! Thank you for joining me on this adventure!
Oh Joyce You truly made my day, or evening as it is now! Oh I'm so thrilled to see and read and feel this deep in my heart I know it must mean so much to you and how it has empowered you and....you are such an inspirational sharer and I just Love what is happening in your life and that your husband is supporting you is the icing on the cake. If I was any closer id have coffee with you and let you tell me about your endeavors and future plans! I have had tattoos made by medical staff for radiation and they are just black dots on my arms and I'd really would like to create something beautiful with that, not sure what? But you inspired me!!!
Thank you so much for sharing this and I will follow you and subscribe to your Substack as I'm so intrigued of your journey ahead and of the looking back. Oh and another thing...you're old enough to do a tattoo anywhere on your body 🤗❤️Much Love Always ❤️
Our brains absolutely prefer what they know.
