Why Most Women Over 60 Don’t Need to “Get Into Alignment
You were born in it. The quality of it — and your nervous system — is what changes everything.
You’re Already in Alignment — But the Quality Changes Everything
Do you think you have to work hard to “get into alignment” with your soul — your inner being?
I used to believe that.
I’d pat myself on the back for meditating (or at least trying), for journaling, for listing five gratitudes, for walking around with a plastic smile to prove to the world that I was in a “positive vibration.”
What a crock.
Deep down, I knew better. But I couldn’t admit it until I realized two things that changed my entire approach to life:
We are always in alignment from the moment we’re born.
What changes — what shapes our daily experience — is the quality of that alignment.
And the fastest way I know to improve that quality? Intentional work with your own nervous system.
When “Danger” Isn’t What You Think It Is
This past year has been a roller coaster — far too many ups and downs that were completely unnecessary had I known sooner the value of regulating my nervous system.
Here’s the thing about danger: it’s not always a man lurking in a dark alley. Sometimes danger is allowing yourself to be seen.
A dear friend of mine wants to write a book. She has the story, the passion, the skill — but she also carries a constant worry about what people she loves will think if she tells it honestly.
Her nervous system reads that possibility as unsafe.
Not because it’s life-threatening in the physical sense — but because the body doesn’t distinguish between a sabertooth tiger and a sideways glance from someone whose opinion you value. Danger is danger.
And when your body thinks you’re in danger, your chest tightens, your stomach knots, and your ability to think clearly shrinks. Harvard research shows that stress chemicals literally pull resources away from the part of your brain that handles long-term thinking and creative problem-solving. You default to short-term survival mode.
How I Changed the Quality of My Alignment
About three months ago, I started paying attention to how my body reacted to specific situations. I noticed two patterns:
A tightness in my chest.
A wave of nausea.
Those sensations were my nervous system’s way of saying, We’re not safe.
Instead of bulldozing past them like I used to, I began soothing my nervous system on purpose — through slow breathing, unclenching my shoulders, grounding my feet, and letting my body know, We’re okay.
As I did this, something remarkable happened: the quality of my integration with my soul — my inner being — improved. I wasn’t wrestling with myself anymore. I moved as one whole being, steady and clear.
The Difference It Made
As a woman over 60, almost 70, my exact reaction was: Well, it’s about time.
Because here’s what changed:
My dreams started flowing again.
I noticed more nudges from my soul.
I could hear and understand those nudges without second-guessing.
And it’s delightful.
Why I’m Telling You This
As an ex-preacher’s wife, I’m dismayed that churches — and honestly, a lot of self-help spaces — don’t teach this. They’ll tell you to “get into alignment” or “raise your vibration” without ever explaining that you were born in alignment… and that your nervous system is the gatekeeper for how clearly you can live from that truth.
And this is why I keep writing:
You cannot reignite, reinvent, or reclaim your dreams when your nervous system is on constant alert.
You can only do it when your body, mind, and soul are moving as one.
When the quality of your alignment is so good, fear no longer drives the bus.
That’s when the real living begins.
