Why Positive Thinking Backfires for Women Over 60 (And What to Do Instead)
You can’t out-think your nervous system. Learn the first step to creating the life you’re craving—then use REFOUNDATION to make it real.

Have you ever wondered why, no matter how many affirmations you repeat, nothing changes?
Here’s why: You can’t out-think your nervous system.
I wish someone had told me that twenty years ago when I was repeating affirmations with all the desperation of a woman trying to outrun her reality.
“I am wealthy.”
“I am loved.”
“I am free.”
“I am unlimited.”
But I wasn’t.
I was broke.
I was exhausted.
I was spiraling.
And most of all—I was scared.
When your body is in survival mode, it will not let in a thought that contradicts the emotional truth it’s currently swimming in. That’s not your fault. That’s biology.
As Joe Dispenza puts it:
“We only accept, believe, and surrender to thoughts that are equal to our emotional state.”
So if you’re deeply unhappy or afraid—and trying to layer positive thoughts on top of that?
They won’t land.
They won’t get past the bouncer standing guard at the door of your nervous system.
They won’t make it to the part of your body that believes and receives.
You’ll just keep repeating things that feel like lies.
And then you’ll blame yourself for not being “spiritual” enough, or “aligned” enough, or “manifest-y” enough.
Let me say this with love:
The problem isn’t you.
The problem is the emotional state you’re trying to bypass.
In my early 60s, I learned this the hard way.
I had just discovered that my real estate investment—the one that was supposed to anchor my retirement—was gone. POOF. The ex let it go into foreclosure. My name was on the deed, but not the mortgage. My $40,000 investment, along with the gains I expected, vanished overnight.
I wandered my local grocery store for what felt like hours, making large circles around the perimeter, trying not to let out a primal scream. I finally put a few groceries in my cart and checked out.
Once home, I tried everything I knew—meditation, journaling, pacing my large ranch house—before I landed on saying affirmations out loud. That did calm me… but only because I wore myself out. For years I kept pleading with the universe in this way, and yes, I made and sold art, but I was just getting by—not just financially, but emotionally.
Fast forward to now, and I finally understand: you must regulate your nervous system before you set a goal, before you practice affirmations, before you sit down to meditate. That has made all the difference.
Here’s how it works:
If you’re feeling fear, and someone delivers fear-based news—your nervous system will accept it instantly. It matches. Same with grief. Same with anger. Same with despair.
But if you try to force-feed your system a beautiful thought while you’re still calibrated to panic or numbness?
Nope. It bounces off.
Because your body isn’t stupid.
It knows the difference between something it can believe and something you’re trying to fake your way into.
So what do you do?
You shift the emotional state first.
Not the thoughts. Not the vision board. Not the “I ams.”
The feeling.
And you don’t have to leap to joy.
You just have to reach for the next available rung.
Not: “I am powerful.”
But: “I’m safe in this one moment.”
Not: “I am wealthy.”
But: “I’ve survived everything so far. I have what I need today.”
That’s what gets past the bouncer.
That’s what softens the system.
That’s what opens the door for new thoughts to actually rewire you.
Once you can regulate your nervous system—whether through daily breathing, gentle movement, or simply pausing to feel safe in the moment—you stop fighting yourself. You finally have the foundation for change that sticks. That’s when the affirmations start to feel true. That’s when the vision board stops feeling like a fantasy and starts feeling like a preview.
If you’re a woman over 60 who feels a quiet pull toward something more—something you haven’t dared to name yet—this is where REFOUNDATION comes in. It’s the step-by-step manual that you can implement now to help you move from that just-under-the-surface yearning into a life you’re actively creating. One you can actually hold.
