Women over 60, It Was Never Built For Us
Part 1: The Lie We Inherited
You stayed kind—
even when the principal was a brute to your sensibilities,
even when your mother-in-law criticized everything from your parenting to your potato salad,
even when your manager spoke over you in meetings and then used your ideas as his own.
You stayed small—
when your husband got the applause and you got the dishes,
when the pastor said your role was to “support,” not speak,
when your children rolled their eyes and you swallowed your truth for the sake of peace.
You stayed faithful—
to the job that drained you,
to the marriage that dried up decades ago,
to the church that told you suffering was holy and questioning was rebellion.
You smiled when you wanted to scream—
at the doctor who dismissed your symptoms,
at the man who interrupted you at a dinner party to explain your own story back to you,
at the family member who made one more “joke” about your weight or your politics or your boundaries.
You served—
you showed up, cooked, cleaned, checked in, remembered birthdays,
and carried the emotional weight of every damn relationship you were in—
even when you were already depleted.
You were the glue.
The peacekeeper.
The volunteer.
The one who made it all run smoothly,
while your own needs stayed buried under everyone else’s priorities.
And still… you ended up feeling invisible.
And then, one day—
something shifted.
It wasn’t dramatic.
No thunderclap. No burning bush.
Just a quiet flicker of awareness.
A soul whisper that said: Wait a second… what about me?
You stopped looking out the window and started looking in the mirror.
You stopped asking “What do they need from me?”
and started wondering “What do I need from myself?”
It felt selfish at first.
Dangerous, even.
Because no one ever taught you how to center yourself without guilt.
But once that headlight turned inward—
once the question “Is this all there is?” became “What else is possible for me now?”—
you couldn’t unsee it.
You saw how much of your life was built around keeping everyone else comfortable.
You saw how small you made yourself to stay safe, to stay wanted, to stay “good.”
You saw the toll it took on your body, your joy, your spirit.
And in that moment, you didn’t need a rescue.
You needed a rebuild.
Let Me Tell You About Elizabeth Barbour
Elizabeth Barbour had already done a lot of living by the time she turned 54.
She had raised a child, ended a long marriage, and navigated more than one career path.
From the outside, her life looked respectable.
But inside?
Something still didn’t fit.
She didn’t want to fade quietly into “later life.”
She didn’t want to stay polite, productive, and invisible.
She didn’t want to keep asking herself “Is this it?” while pretending the ache wasn’t there.
So she did the unthinkable.
She enrolled in law school at 54.
Sat in classrooms surrounded by people half her age.
Took the bar exam when most women her age were being told to “slow down and enjoy retirement.”
And now?
Now she’s in her late 60s, practicing family law in Roanoke, Virginia—just an hour from where I’m writing this.
She advocates for women trying to escape domestic violence.
She works inside a legal system that was never designed to protect us—and uses it to fight for the ones still trying to break free.
Elizabeth didn’t “reinvent” herself.
She didn’t chase a glow-up or rebrand.
She simply woke up—
and refused to let her story end with someone else’s period.
She rebuilt.
On her terms.
And she did it not to impress anyone—
but to serve in a way that felt aligned, rooted, and fiercely true.
She is not an exception.
She’s a signal.
A flash in the dark to say:
It’s not too late. You’re not too far gone. You’re just beginning to see clearly.
And Now… It’s Your Turn
You don’t need to go to law school.
You don’t need to burn everything down or start over from scratch.
But you do need to tell the truth.
To yourself.
You are allowed to rebuild.
Not because you’re broken—
but because you’ve outgrown the life that was built around your silence.
You are not late.
You are not behind.
You are right on time to become the architect of what comes next.

There was something freeing about turning 50. There was a sense of empowerment that came from being young enough to explore and old enough to not care what others think. Now in my 60s, I am reimagining what is possible. It’s exciting!
This is EXACTLY how I feel now.
It’s time for Me to take care of ME.
