Women Over 60, please Stop Staring in the Rearview:
Why Your Value Is Forward, Not Behind
Let me tell you about last week. I was standing in my kitchen, staring out the window with my hands wrapped around a mug of coffee that had already gone cold. It was one of those gray, ordinary mornings where my brain wanted to flip back through the highlight reel of my past—when my phone rang off the hook, when my kids needed something every five minutes, when I felt “necessary” to somebody.
It’s funny how those memories sneak in, isn’t it? There’s a sweetness to them, but also a sting—a little ache that whispers, Maybe your best days already happened.
But let’s get honest about why that ache shows up:
We’re bombarded—every single day—by a youth-obsessed media machine that tells us our usefulness and beauty expired at fifty. The ads, the influencers, the TV shows all push this echo chamber of “vitality = young.” But here’s the twist nobody talks about:
That whole youth ecosystem? It’s cracking. AI is now replacing the need for models. Algorithms are choosing faces, not people. Suddenly, being “forever young” isn’t even real—it’s just a digital effect.
And guess what? In the middle of all this, companies are finally waking up. More and more brands are looking to hire women over 60 to be social influencers, because the world is starving for something real—for wisdom, for lived experience, for the kind of grounded truth you can’t download from an app.
You know who young people trust most right now? Their grandmothers, their mentors, the women who’ve lived long enough to see through the bullshit.
Every now and then, I record a three-minute video and send it to my grandsons. They’re all adults, but let me tell you: they love it. They tell me how much it means to get a little piece of “grandma wisdom” in their day—something real, from a woman who’s walked through a lot and is still standing.
We have to rethink how we’re useful to the people we love, and at the same time, rethink how we’re useful to ourselves.
Tiny Step: Claim One Minute for You
Before the day is over, stand in front of your mirror (yes, really—go find one), look yourself in the eye, and say:
“I’m doing this for me. This minute is mine.”
Then do one small thing you want to do—pour yourself a favorite drink, play a song you love, record a quick video message for your kids or grandkids, or just step outside and feel the air on your skin.
It’s not about the action. It’s about choosing yourself, even for sixty seconds.
Memories are beautiful. We honor them, we treasure them. But it’s your turn now.
This is your invitation to move forward, not backward—to become visible to yourself again.
