You Don’t Need More Stamina.
You Need a Structure for Your Energy.
Yesterday I spent six hours in a courthouse. I testified for ten minutes. The rest of the time, I waited.
I waited in the building. I waited outside. I waited in a hard chair in a room where I couldn’t fully relax, where I had to stay alert, stay polite, stay quiet. When it was finally over, I thought I’d come home and crash. But I didn’t.
Instead, I walked to the corner store because I wanted a Coke. And right there, I ran into my state delegate.
We talked. He invited me to get involved in legislation.
From there, I ran into someone else who told me about another downtown building changing hands.
Then I met with Scott for two hours to talk through projects, timelines, and ideas. I tell you all this to say: I was out in the world, engaging, networking, contributing, showing up fully. It was a full day in every sense of the word.
And the day after? I was wiped out.
Absolutely, undeniably, bone-deep tired.
Not because I’m weak. Not because I’m out of shape. Not because I’m broken.
Because I held a lot. I carried the weight of presence. Of composure. Of insight. Of leadership.
And what hit me was this:
I don’t need to become someone with more stamina.
I need to become someone with more structure around my energy.
Let that sink in.
This season I’m walking into will include at least three high-level projects. All of them will pay me well. All of them will require energy, attention, and presence. And I want to show up for them without falling apart afterward.
So I’m not asking, "How do I push harder?" anymore. I’m asking, "How do I recover better?"
Here’s what that looks like for me:
I pre-block quiet days after full days
I eat real food instead of whatever’s convenient
I go for walks without earbuds
I schedule joy on purpose
I say no to extra calls, even when they sound "worth it"
None of that is glamorous. But it’s what allows me to keep going.
This is the real work of becoming sustainable. Not pushing until the crash. But designing for the return.
We are not lazy. We are not weak. We are not asking for too much.
We are women who have done the emotional labor of ten people while trying to meet our own deadlines. We have bent ourselves into the shape of usefulness until we no longer recognized ourselves.
Structure isn’t control. It’s care.
If you’re walking into something big, here’s your permission slip: You don’t have to become superhuman to handle it. You just have to build a soft place for your energy to land.
