Women over 60 Holy Defiance:
The Art of Becoming Ourselves
Do you remember that gawd-awful Enjoli commercial?
“I can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, and never, ever let you forget you're a man.”
GAG.
Our very essence reduced to a bacon-frying, ego-stroking, pantyhose-wearing sidekick.
And yet—that was the air we breathed.
Over and over again, we were served messaging that said:
Your identity is what you do for others.
In my younger years, I wore roles like second skin:
“I was a mother.”
“I was a pastor’s wife.”
“I was the one who cooked the roast every Sunday.”
I didn’t know I could choose another identity.
I only knew what was expected.
And by all means, I performed it beautifully.
But here’s the truth I see now:
That identity also hid my soul from me.
Maybe you’ve felt that too.
We often mistake the roles we've performed for the souls we are.
Let’s name it:
I was the lunch-packer.
The ride-giver.
The one who remembered birthdays.
The fixer.
The forgiver.
The one who said yes.
The one who didn’t cry.
The one who did.
But none of that is the whole of me.
Not even close.
The Consequences of Misidentifying Ourselves
“When the task is over, do I still know my name?”
This is the moment so many women over 60 find themselves in.
The kids are grown.
The marriage shifted—or gone.
The job, the title, the house full of activity? Quiet now.
Suddenly, the labels fall off like old tape.
And underneath?
A beautiful, mysterious, powerful soul who hasn’t been properly seen in decades.
Maybe ever.
And she is not here to fade.
She is here to design.
To reclaim.
To renovate her life from the soul outward.
There is no reason—save fiscal—to be “practical” now.
Everything we choose to do at this stage
is an act of defiance.
A refusal to become dull, invisible, or mediocre.
So Who Are You—Really?
Let’s bring it home:
Who were you before the world handed you labels?
Who are you when you're not trying to be useful?
Who do you become when you're finally allowed to just be?
Maybe I’m not here to carry the weight of every task—
I’m here to carry the light of my own becoming.
There is no expiration date on your creativity.
Your soul doesn’t retire.
There’s no rulebook that says your best years are behind you.
There’s only now.
There’s only choice.
Reclaiming the dreams of your youth at this stage of life
is standing against the headwinds of expectations
thwarted upon us by society and social standards.
There’s only this moment to practice holy defiance—
by making the dreams you buried long ago real again in the present.
David Bowie said it best:
“Aging is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been.”
And amen to that.
Your Turn (if you feel like sharing)
What role or label have you outgrown?
What’s a task you performed that people thought was you?
Who are you becoming now that the labels are fading?
Or maybe today’s rebellion is just sitting in stillness and saying:
“No more performance. This is who I am now.”
There’s no need to be practical anymore.
Unless practical brings you joy.
Everything you choose to do now—
Every single thing—is an act of defiance
against the dull, mediocre script society wrote for you.
And I don’t know about you, but I’m not acting in that play anymore.
We have lived decades inside roles that left little room for rebellion.
We were told to be good, be useful, be beautiful, and be quiet.
But something is shifting now.
We’re no longer here to simply age gracefully.
We’re here to rebel gratefully.
Because growing old is inevitable.
But growing dull?
That’s entirely optional.

If you haven’t picked up your copy of REFOUNDATION yet, now’s the perfect time. And if you’re not a paid subscriber, this is your nudge—come join us.
I’m keeping these calls intentionally small: just 20 spots per session so that the space stays intimate, interactive, and real. We’ve grown a lot recently, and I want to keep the quality high. If there’s more interest, I’ll open a second group—but for now, it’s 20 at a time.
